The attraction of Benllech is the beaches and village life making it perfect to enjoy the summer for both visitors and residents. However, due to a lack of provisions for active travel, it can be difficult to enjoy these attractions.
Primary causes for this concern centre around road safety and illegal parking, especially in the village centre. In order to prevent this, Anglesey Council is proposing to introduce an Active Travel Scheme in Benllech to improve the safety of walking and cycling routes in and around the village. Active travel refers to walking and cycling for your daily activities, including travel to work, school runs, shops or leisure as an alternative to motorised travel. Being able to take part in these types of activities should improve healthier lifestyles.
The proposed improvements include widening of footpaths, introduction of shared-use paths, changes to junction layouts, installation of a pedestrian crossing and a one-way system along the Beach Road. All members of the public are able to have their say through an online consultation running from 05/07/23 until 16/08/23. The link for the online consultation is as follows:
In addition to this, there is also an in-person consultation event on 19th July from 3pm to 7 pm being held at Neuadd Goffa Goronwy Owen, Bellech LL74 8SF.
The proposal has the support of both the Welsh Government and the Transportation of Wales and has the potential to bring many benefits to the local area. If successful, it is likely to attract more visitors interested in being able to walk and cycle safely to Benllech and the surrounding areas. Local residents will also benefit from improved air quality, healthier lifestyles and reduced traffic.
